Close Look at Film That Sparked Libya Violence
The New York Times takes a look at the film that sparked the events in Libya yesterday and led to the killing of the country’s US Ambassador. The film was apparently made in California but it’s unclear who is responsible for it. The Times says a 14-minute preview—all that may exist of the actual film—appeared on YouTube in June to little fanfare. But then someone translated it into Arabic and re-uploaded it days before September 11th.
Mock Cannon Fight Turns Bloody
What was supposed to be a mock cannon fight to celebrate the Ocean Institute’s annual tall ships festival turned into “a scene from ‘The Exorcist,’” says the LA Times. When a cannon aboard one ship ran out of blanks during the festival’s finale, organizers accidentally filled it with a box of buckshot ammunition. Whoops. Two people were injured as a result.
New iPhone: Bigger, Thinner, Wider, Faster
Apple CEO Tim Cook introduced the world to the iPhone 5 yesterday looking, notes the San Jose Mercury News, “remarkably like his late predecessor, Steve Jobs, with his close-cropped gray hair, jeans and black shirt.” The newest iPhone looks a lot like its predecessor too but they are some noteworthy changes: the screen is larger and wider, and the whole phone is thinner (and lighter). It runs on LTE wireless technology, which means it’s faster…oh, and the power cord? That’s smaller.
Disappearing Design Takes Over
Lamps plugged into plaster, music emanating from thin air, beds that disappear into the wall—the New York Times says the newest thing in the design world is something called disappearing design. My take: If you have so much money that you can buy a bed that disappears into the ceiling to reveal a tub—maybe you should just buy a bigger apartment.
High School Football Team Blindsided By Secret Report
A bizarre story about high school football on the front page of the Chicago Tribune this morning. After losing their last game, players from LaSalle-Peru High School were given a possible explanation as to why: a secret scouting report, which details each player’s weaknesses and medical history, was leaked to each of its nine rivals. The secret report suggested targeting players who’ve been injured.
The Cutest Stowaway
She’s going to visit that enormous mouse without me?! I imagine that was the thought running through Bob-bob the cat’s head, when he decided to jump into his owner’s suitcase and stowaway to Disney World. The Orlando Sentinel says somehow the cat made it through the TSA screeners and emerged shaken but okay in his owner’s hotel room after a flight from Ohio.
Speed to Your Gate, In a Porsche
The Wall Street Journal has the details on a fun Delta promotion at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. Top fliers will be met at the gate and driven across the tarmac to their connecting flight in a $66,000 Porsche Cayenne S. And it’s not just for show—the airline says their car service saves about 25 to 35 people from missing their connections daily.
