Brooklyn is on Long Island

Brooklyn is on Long Island

Yes, Brooklyn is part of Long Island. The New York Times notes that some New Yorkers are suprised to learn that the Islanders move to the Barclays Center won’t necessitate a name change. Need evidence? The Revolutionary War’s Battle of Long Island was fought not far from the team’s new Brooklyn digs. The Islanders deal had been whispered about as a possibility, but the negotiations were kept surprisingly quiet until an official announcement yesterday.

Sports Teams Fly High with Charter Flights

Sports Teams Fly High with Charter Flights

The Wall Street Journal gives us a glimpse inside the charter planes used by pro sports teams in this morning’s paper. Instead of flying with the rest of us, or buying their own private jets, many sports teams charter regular airline flights to get to away games. Delta appears to be the airline of choice and the perks—Dove ice cream bars served on silver platters; beds big enough for 7-footers—are a lot nicer than mere mortals receive.

Homeless Wedding VIDEO Draws Criticism for Timberlake, Biel

Homeless Wedding VIDEO Draws Criticism for Timberlake, Biel

A great photo via People of Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel after their recent wedding in Italy. There’s a wee bit of controversy, however, says the New York Daily News—and it’s not that Biel chose pink instead of white for her dress.  Apparently, the couple showed a video to their guests featuring the “homeless, street musicians and transvestites” wishing them well. Gawker got ahold of the tape, which has drawn much criticism since it was posted online. SEE THE VIDEO

Hollywood Sign Through History

Hollywood Sign Through History

It’s just Holly on the front page of the LA Times this morning. The iconic sign is being stripped and repainted, letter by letter. The project is supposed to last 10 weeks, so plan accordingly if you’re in Los Angeles and hoping for a photo op. In the meantime, the Times has some great historic photos of the Hollywood sign to tide us over.

Superman Quits Journalism

Superman Quits Journalism

Even Clark Kent thinks journalism has seen better days. The Chicago Tribune says Superman quit his job at the Daily Planet in the latest issue of the comic series which hit shelves yesterday. He actually walks out, mild-mannered though he is, decrying the state of journalism as he goes. Apparently, his anger is directed at both Lois Lane for covering a sex scandal and at his boss Perry White for “pandering to the public demand for entertainment instead of providing news.”

Picasso’s Ghost Image Comes into Focus

Picasso’s Ghost Image Comes into Focus

Buying a Picasso maybe a better investment than previously thought. The New York Times has side-by-side shots of a painting hidden beneath another Picasso painting, “Woman Ironing.” Historians have known of the ghost image’s existence—a man with a mustache—for years but they were recently able to produce a detailed picture of it using two types of infrared cameras.

Search Engine Tricks and Tips

Search Engine Tricks and Tips

The New York Times has a helpful guide for web searchers in this morning’s paper. Tricks like typing in your zip cope plus the word “movie” will get you local theater times. Swap “movie” for “weather” and you’ve got your local forecast. And, say you want to limit your results to a specific website, all you need to do is enter site: patspapers.com into Google and voila.

Elect Your Favorite Candy

Elect Your Favorite Candy

There’s only a week left until Halloween. And to whittle away the time, the Oregonian is hosting its second annual Candy Bowl. Butterfinger beat out 64 competitors, all vying for the title of world’s best candy in this year’s brawl. But the fight is not over. Now, you can vote as Butterfinger takes on Reeses, last year’s winner, for Candyland’s ultimate title.
