‘Made in USA’ Huge in Mexico
The “Made in USA” label is really big, says the Washington Post—at Mexican Costcos. The middle class in Mexico is growing quickly, and they are using their accumulating buying power to buy American. In light of the growing demand, some experts say turning our attention from China to our neighbors to the south would be a smart economic strategy.
PHOTO: Water Levels Dip at Hoover Dam’s Lake Mead
There’s a scary climate change photo on the front page of the Washington Post this morning showing just how much the water on Lake Mead has fallen from historic levels. The top of that white band shows the traditional water line.
VIDEO: Obama Gets Bear Hug
The bar for hugging the president has been set. On a campaign stop yesterday in Florida, President Obama got a serious bear hug. Pizza shop owner Scott Van Duzer told the Palm Beach Post that “pure emotion” caused him to grab the president and lift him off the ground. Obama later complimented the 46-year-old father of three on his impressive strength.
The Friendliest Traffic Cop Around
That’s Sheriff Deputy Elton Simmons smiling as he hands over a speeding ticket. The LA Times says Simmons has managed something that most people who do a job that the public loathes can only dreamed of: he hasn’t received one complaint since 1992. Simmons says his secret is to treat people with respect: “It’s never ‘Do you know why I stopped you?’ It’s ‘Hey, how are you doing today?’”
Gauging Wealth With Trees
How do you judge a community’s wealth? Look at the trees, says the San Jose Mercury News. A pair of photos taken from space shows a shocking tree disparity in two adjacent California communities. In the top photo, you can see that the low-income neighborhood of West Oakland is tree-starved. The wealthy enclave of Piedmont, by comparison, is lush and green.
Chicago Teachers Strike
The Chicago Tribune reports on the city’s first teacher strike in 25 years this morning. Union representatives spent all day Sunday trying to hash out a deal but were unsuccessful. The main areas of contention are centered around the cost of health benefits, how teachers are evaluated and job security. Until an agreement, a fraction of the schools will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. around the city.
