Ross Perot: Economic Disaster…Told You So!

Ross Perot: Economic Disaster…Told You So!

There he is. Ross Perot is on the front page of USA Today this morning feeling “vindicated” that his predictions about impending economic disaster came true. Though Perot says he’s not happy he was so prescient, it has brought him out of his self-imposed exile, says the paper, The 82-7ear-old billionaire says he’s too old for politics now but he does have an autobiography coming out, which offers up “one more cure for what he calls the nation’s ‘economic cancer.’”

Bustling Post Office in Little Saigon

Bustling Post Office in Little Saigon

The Post Office’s tough times have been the topic of many front page stories recently, which is why I found it heartening to read about a brach that’s actually doing well. The LA Times says the post office in Little Saigon has been bustling since the early 90s and still is. Mail is not the only business conducted, which perhaps explains the branch’s success: “Postal workers act as translators (‘Uncle, you cannot send packages labeled UPS’), advisors (‘Let me show you how you can save $2 for iced coffee’) and family friends (‘Seventh Sister, are you giving gifts to your daughter’s child? She didn’t graduate. How can she get into a good school?’).”

Get to Work, Animals!

Get to Work, Animals!

A few weeks ago, authorities in Chicago announced that they were looking for some good goats/sheep to help clear brush from a field at O’Hare Airport. That got Tribune columnist Barbara Brotman thinking—how else could animals be used for the public good? First, she notes what a boon airport sheep would be to those who knit before positing some other potential jobs: Golden retriever airport greeters?  Rentable hamster hand-warmers? Post-street fair garbage goats?

Lohan in Hotel Scuffle

Lohan in Hotel Scuffle

It’s been awhile, but Lindsay Lohan is back to making headlines. This morning, she’s on the front page of the New York Post after getting into a scuffle with a congressional aide about some photos he alleged snapped of her. Police were called to the W Hotel in Manhattan after Lohan accused the 25-year-old man of choking her in an attempt to wrestle back his cell phone. Cops neglected to press charges after finding no marks on the actress.

“Medinah Meltdown” at Ryder Cup

“Medinah Meltdown” at Ryder Cup

There are some ecstatic Europeans and a dour-looking Tiger Woods on the front page of the Chicago Tribune this morning after the former stunned the latter and his teammates with a wild comeback in the Ryder Cup this weekend.  The final score was 14 1/2 to 13 1/2, which is on par with the largest comeback in the tourney’s history.

Cable Networks Stars of TV

Cable Networks Stars of TV

Interesting explanation of the changing TV landscape in today’s LA Times. Cable shows like (my favorite) Showtime’s “Homeland” wouldn’t have been viable a decade ago because they didn’t bring in the audience that shows on a major network demand. But thanks to the new economics of the TV industry, cable networks have show a willingness to dump money into a show not for Nielsen ratings but for critical acclaim, Facebook likes and ultimately, power.

With a Tattoo, Holocaust Ancestors Never Forget

With a Tattoo, Holocaust Ancestors Never Forget

A story out of Jerusalem on the front page of the New York Times this morning. A trend in Israel among descendants of Holocaust survivors is to get a tattoo to match the number that was inked onto prisoners in concentration camps. Pictured here, Livia Rebak’s grandson Daniel got a tattoo to match her number 4559.
