Should Facebook Give Access to Kids?
Should Facebook give access to kids? It’s happening anyway—kids lie about their age and there’s no real way to regulate that so Facebook is looking at ways to make it happen legitimately. The Wall Street Journal says one strategy being explored is tethering a kids’ account to their parent’s, which would give adults control over friend requests. The parent’s account would also be charged for any games downloaded by their children.
21-Year-Old to Become Youngest Medical School Grad
We’ve got another Doogie Howser on our hands. Sho Yano is about to become the youngest graduate of the University of Chicago’s medical school. He’s 21. A child prodigy, Yano started college at the age of 9. He’s already received a PhD, is concert pianist and has a black belt in tae kwon do. The Chicago Tribune says Yano’s IQ is too high to be accurately measured, but is way beyond “genius” level.
Shawn Johnson Retires
Shawn Johnson has retired at the ripe old age of 20. The Olympic gymnast and “Dancing with the Stars” winner, announced over the weekend that she will not compete at the London Games because of a knee injury she sustained on a skiing trip back in 2010. The Des Moines Register says Johnson is one of the most recognizable female athletes in America according to a recent poll, a group that includes Anna Kournikova, Kristi Yamaguchi and Danica Patrick.
Colorado Man Becomes a Google Plus Celeb
The Fort Collins Coloradoan has an interesting profile about Daniel Ibanez, who’s become somewhat of an Internet celebrity—on Google Plus, not Facebook. Ibanez, who’s a high school art teacher, amassed more than 1.5 million followers—more than Alicia Keys has—by using Google Plus’ “Hangouts on Air” feature to teach strangers digital painting.
Game Show Icon Richard Dawson Dies at 79
A game show icon died over the weekend in Los Angeles. Richard Dawson had cancer of the esophagus. An actor best known for his role on “Hogan’s Heroes,” Dawson used that fame to score a job as the host of “Family Feud.” The New York Times says Dawson used his trademark kiss-every-single-female-contestant move as a way to fight discrimination.
The Politics of a First Class Upgrade
Forget trying to get an upgrade on Delta Flight 2384—there are 57 people in front of you. The Salt Lake Tribune says the only direct flight from the nation’s capital to Utah’s capital is jam-packed with lawmakers. And on any given flight senators from Utah, Idaho, Wyoming and Montana are all trying to use their seniority to get a seat in first class.
Summer Freeze
“Baby, it’s Cold Inside.” That’s the apt-for-a-Monday headline in the Washington Post Style section this morning. After a weekend of thawing out, it’s time to return to your ice cave, er, cubicle. The Post talks to several office workers for tips on how to survive the “hypothermic tundra.” One woman says she has two sweaters—one for her arm and one for her knees.
PHOTO: Flotilla for the Queen
Cool picture on the front page of the LA Times this morning. That’s the River Thames, which was filled with hundreds of boats over the weekend to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, marking 60 years of her reign.
New Jersey’s Bermuda Triangle
Round Valley Reservoir has some of the best fishing in the country. But New Jersey’s deepest man-made lake has also earned a reputation as the state’s “Bermuda Triangle” says the Newark Star Ledger, due, in part, to the 40 or so people who’ve disappeared on the lake in the last few decades.
