Finish So Close Photo Can’t Call It
On Saturday, at the US Olympic trials in Eugene, Oregon, there was a 100 meter dash so close, that even a photo finish couldn’t call a winner. The New York Times calls it “track’s version of Bush v. Gore.” Ties are so rare in the sport that track officials don’t have a protocol in place to deal with them. So after 24 hours of deliberation, Allyson Felix and Jeneba Tarmoh will either flip a coin or have a run off, to decide who will take the third slot on the US team in London.
Muslim Brotherhood Candidate Wins Egypt Election
An historic election took place in Cairo over the weekend, reports the LA Times. Muslim Brotherhood candidate Mohamed Morsi won 51.7 percent of the vote, the “culmination of an 84-year effort” to elect Egypt’s first Islamist president. Almost immediately, however, it became apparent just how much power the military had amassed since Hosni Mubarak was deposed, including taking steps to make the office of president little more than that of a figurehead.
Can Women Have it All?: Atlantic Story Goes Viral
An Atlantic magazine story has gone viral, says the Washington Post, and women everywhere “are taking to the Internet to freak out” about it. The subject? Can Women Have it All?—‘all’ being a family and a career. Written by a 53-year-old former State Department official and mother of two, the author’s conclusion is that no, women can not have it all. As one of the 119,000 people who liked the story on Facebook put it: “If it can’t work for her, how will it ever work for us lesser mortals?”
The Rise of the Breastaurant
We are living in the age of the “breastaurant.” The New York Daily News says Hooters-like eating establishments that feature scantily clad waitresses are a booming sector on the restaurant industry these days. But despite their innuendo-filled names—Twin Peaks; Mugs’n'Jugs—the owners say that they aren’t just selling sex. As one manager explains: “We want to be very PG-13.”
Luna the Lamprey to Tweet
It ain’t easy to love a lamprey. The ‘blood-sucking eel-like creatures” have “three fangs and gaping sucker mouths” says the San Francisco Chronicle. But scientists are hoping a new ambassador on Twitter—Luna the Lamprey—can help educate people on the plight of these endangered species. Says the scientist behind the project: “We decided, well, if a cobra can tweet, why can’t a lamprey.”
Smartphones Leaving Hikers Lost in the Woods
We’re used to smartphones solving problems—there’s an app for everything, right? But the Boston Globe says they are actually causing quite a problem in the woods. Wildlife experts say more hikers aren’t packing traditional gear—map, compass, flashlight—and instead are relying on their GPS-enabled smartphones, which becomes a problem when, say, you’ve used up your whole battery taking photos.
Tending to Wimbledon’s Celebrity Grass
It’s a tough year to be the grass at Wimbledon. The famed tourney begins Monday and then the Olympic tennis tournament starts a month later, on July 28. In preparation, the New York Times says a team from the Sports Turf Research Institute has descended on the grounds. And in case of an emergency, they have an entire replica of Center Court growing on a plot 200 miles north of London.
Alex Trebek Recovering After Heart Attack
Alex Trebek is out of jeopardy and recovering in a Los Angeles hospital after suffering a mild heart attack this weekend. The LA Times says the veteran host is in good spirits and will be back behind the podium at the end of July, to tape the 29th season of “Jeopardy!”
