Details Emerge as Colorado Mourns

Details Emerge as Colorado Mourns

A good part of the Denver Post this morning is dedicated to coverage of Friday’s movie theater shooting. In the weeks before the massacre, shooter James Holmes tried unsuccessfully to join a gun club but his voicemail message (“a deep, guttural voice, rambling something incoherent”) put the range owner on alert. Police have also figured out that Holmes rigged the stereo in his apartment to blare on a timer, hoping the noise complaint would divert cops. And the New York Times says ordering 6000 rounds of ammunition online is “pretty much as easy as ordering a book from Amazon.”

Remembering the Champions

Remembering the Champions

With less than a week to go before the opening ceremonies, the New York Times puts together an awesome photo spread featuring athletes who competed in the 1948 Games, the last time the Olympics was held in London. Pictured above is diver Sammy Lee, 91. In 1948, Lee was the first Asian-American to win an Olympic medal.

Who Knew? Gymnasts Love Honey

Who Knew? Gymnasts Love Honey

There’s a great story about the Olympics on the front page of the Wall Street Journal this morning, detailing the love affair between gymnasts and honey. If you’re doing a bar routine you can use whatever sticky stuff you want on your hands. Mollases and syrup are popular—but honey seems to be the favorite.

Paterno Statue Removed

Paterno Statue Removed

That’s Joe Paterno on the front page of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette—the guy in the middle. A forklift carried away the 900-pound, 7-foot-tall statue of the former Penn State coach yesterday as a crowd of fans gathered to say goodbye. University officials are now bracing for a wave of fines to come down from the NCAA in the wake of Jerry Sandusky’s ongoing sex-abuse scandal.

End to China’s One-Child Law?

End to China’s One-Child Law?

On the front page of the New York Times: is it time for China to end its one-child-per-couple rule? The debate is happening on several levels. The big picture is that some experts believe China needs a larger young workforce to keep the economy clicking. And there’s a debate about the safety of late-term abortions, which some women use to comply with the law.

School Icon Weekly Reader Shuts Down

School Icon Weekly Reader Shuts Down

Another classic newspaper has hit hard times, reports the New York Post this morning. Classroom staple Weekly Reader is shutting down, after its rival Scholastic bought the school publication earlier this year and laid off all but five employees. At its peak, Weekly Reader had 13 millions subscribers, though in recent years those number had fallen under one million.

Opinion: Yahoo, a Media Company, Not Search Engine

Opinion: Yahoo, a Media Company, Not Search Engine

David Carr has a question for Yahoo’s new CEO Marissa Mayer in this morning’s New York Times. He wants to know, what is Yahoo? You may think of it as a search engine. But Carr says Yahoo accidentally became a media company, noting that huge numbers of Americans turn to the site for a combination of newswire stories and original content.

Study: One in 3 Chance You’re a Victim of Fish Fraud

Study: One in 3 Chance You’re a Victim of Fish Fraud

Talk about a bait ‘n’ switch. The Sun Sentinel says fish fraud runs rampant at restaurants around the country. According to a new reports, there’s a one-in-three chance that you won’t be served the fish you ordered and instead will get a less expensive variety, like tilapia. Sushi joints were Florida’s most “egregious offenders,” mislabeling white tuna 100 percent of the time.
