Search for Jimmy Hoffa’s Body Leads to Driveway
Authorities are investigating a tip they received from a man who claims Jimmy Hoffa is buried under a driveway in suburban Michigan. This afternoon they will drill down and take a soil sample from the area and then send the sample out for testing. The Detroit Free Press says police are skeptical that they’ll find anything but either way, it should take a week or two to get the results.
Netanyahu: Iran’s Nuclear Ambitions Need ‘Red Line’
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is on the front page of most papers this morning. Yesterday, in a speech the United Nations General Assembly, he showed an image demonstrating that Iran was on track to have an atomic bomb by summer of 2013 The Wall Street Journal says he “implied that Israel wouldn’t consider attacking Iran at least until the spring.”
Review: ‘Homeland’ Narrative Wild, But More Plausible Than ‘24’
“Homeland,” one of my favorite TV shows, returns this Sunday on Showtime. Here’s what Alessandra Stanley says about season 2 in today’s New York Times: “To hold momentum — and postpone a denouement for a dozen episodes (and into future seasons) — the narrative has to take ever more preposterous turns and plump up implausible villains. Not as much as ‘24,’ perhaps, but at least half as much: ‘12.’”
Old iPhones Bring Big Bucks Online
Want the new iPhone 5, but scared off by the price tag? The Orlando Sentinel says you can get a decent amount of money selling your old model online. Several pawn sites have cropped up that specialize in iPhones, and they’ll even take cracked or damaged models. Says the CEO of one company: “The demand from buyers for refurbished iPhone models 4 and 4S is nearly insatiable.”
Refs to Foot Locker: Can We Have Our Old Jobs Back?
There’s a funny editorial cartoon in the New York Post this morning. That’s a group of replacement refs outside of a Foot Locker. The caption reads: “Real refs are back—we need our old jobs back.”
Explaining LIBOR
New York Times writer Floyd Norris has an excellent explanation of why regulators in London are eager for changes to be made to the benchmark LIBOR interest rate. He writes: “There were two implicit assumptions in LIBOR. One was that banks were virtually risk-free…the other was that there was a way to actually calculate what the rate was. Both assumptions turned out to be wrong.”
FBI Investigates Flea Market Renoir
Two years ago, a woman in West Virginia bought a Renoir for $7 at a flea market. After months of trying to figure out where the painting came from, an auction was planned for this week; the painting was supposed to sold for around $100,000. But then an intrepid Washington Post reporter searched through the files at the Baltimore Museum of Art and discovered the painting had actually been stolen, even after the museum had initially said it was not. Now the auction is on hold while the FBI investigate.
