The best headlines, the most interesting photography and conversation-starting articles from today’s newspapers.
Zeus, King of Large Dogs
The Detroit Free-Press puts a local hero on the front page this morning. That’s Zeus the Great Dane. He was just crowned the world’s largest dog by the folks at the Guinness Book of World Records. Measuring 44 inches from foot to shoulder, Zeus is about 7 foot 4 when he stretches out, like in this photo. His owner says Zeus goes through a 30-pound bag of dog food every two weeks.
Aging Motorcycle Fans Trade Bikes for Trikes
Great headline in the New York Times this morning: “Born to Be Wild, Aging Bikers Settle for Comfy.” Aches and pains have led aging motorcycle enthusiasts to swap in their hogs for trikes. The three-wheel bikes are more stable than traditional motorcycles—“equal parts ‘Easy Rider’ and easy chair”—and apparently safer. I love this quote from 74-year-old Grady Howard: “I told my wife it was either trike it or park it, and she said, ‘Trike it.’ ”
Magic Kingdom Adds Beer, Wine to Menu
The Magic Kingdom has become a little more adult-friendly, says the Sun Sentinel. For the first time in its 41-year history, you can sip a beer or a have a glass of wine within the park. The service will start in November when the new Be Our Guest restaurant opens; sales of beer and wine will be restricted to dinner service.
Kate Middleton Topless Photos Anger Royals
The British Royal family is outraged at the French magazine “Closer” for releasing topless photos of Kate Middleton, says the UK’s Independent. Likening it to the “worst excesses of the paparazzi during the Diana, Princess of Wales era,” they are said to be consulting with lawyers about how to deal with the situation. If you’re curious, Gawker was published the photos, which feature a topless princess sunbathing in the south of France.
Nike Drops Price of LeBron Sneaker to $270
Nike has decided $300 is a bit too expensive for a pair of LeBron X basketball shoes, reports the Wall Street Journal this morning—$270 is a bit more reasonable. The price was cut by $30 after some people called Nike “insensitive for raising sneaker prices at a time when many consumers were financially stretched during the back-to-school shopping season.” A less expensive pair without the tracking sensors will be sold for $180.
B-School Students Screen Pitches for “Shark Tank”
Real estate mogul Barbara Corcoran has figured out a novel way to get someone else to do her leg work, says the New York Post. While a contestant on the reality show “Shark Tank,” she enlisted a group of Columbia Business School students to research what companies she should invest in. Initially, they were offered extra credit for their extensive research but those who continued on after school was out are making $500 per parcel of advice. Say Corcoran: “They take my deals, slice them up, chop them apart, do the due diligence and spit it back, and they get graded on it. It is real life.”
ABC News Sued for “Pink Slime” Coverage
A company called Beef Products Inc. is suing ABC News, reports the LA Times this morning, for their coverage of the “pink slime” controversy. According to the lawsuit, ABC News “misled consumers into believing that the product was unsafe, even though it had been approved for human consumption by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.”
Fashion Week Confidential
New York Post writer Kyle Smith tries to break down the dynamic of fashion shows in today’s papers and his insights are pretty funny. He writes: “Turns out, all the fashion personalities can’t stand one another, and all the air-kissing and ‘So good to see yous’ are masking raging inner turmoil that makes the Sunnis and the Shiites look as tight as the Olsen sisters. “
