The best headlines, the most interesting photography and conversation-starting articles from today’s newspapers.
Vice President Face Off
There’s a great photographic summary of last night’s debate on the front page of the Washington Post. The face off between Vice President Joe Biden and Representative Paul Ryan was “as much a do-over as a debate” says Post writer Karen Tumulty. Biden spent the evening defending the Obama administration and pointing out the GOP missteps. Ryan, on the other hand, played it safe.
Debate Recap: ‘Best Political Conversation in Years’
The vice presidential debate was popular on the editorial page of the New York Times this morning. The paper calls it “one of the best and meatiest political conversations in many years.” Both candidates, the Times says, are truly engaged on the issues: “In contrast to the dismal meeting last week between President Obama and Mitt Romney, this debate gave voters a chance to evaluate the positions of the two tickets, in part because Representative Paul Ryan’s nonanswers were accurate reflections of his campaign.”
Panetta Warns of ‘Cyber-Pearl Harbor’
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta sent out a warning yesterday about the possibility of a “cyber-Pearl Harbor,” reports the New York Times. He told a crowd in New York that an attack by foreign computer hackers could do serious damage to the country’s infrastructure, dismantling transportation, the power grid—even the government. Pentagon officials say while the threat is real, Panetta was likely stumping for a cybersecurity bill that was stalled by a group of Republicans.
Giant Eyeball Washes Up in Florida
A cool shell, sure. But who expects to find a giant eyeball while strolling the beach? That’s exactly what happened to Gino Covacci, says the Sun Sentinel. His first reaction was to kick the softball-size orb. When he did he realized he was looking at the ” biggest eyeball he had ever seen.” Wildlife officials are now trying to determine what sea creature the missing eyeball may have come from.
Wyclef Jean’s Charity Out of Business
What ever happened to Wyclef Jean’s Yele? The New York Times says the charity, created to rebuild Haiti after the devastating 2010 earthquake, “effectively went out of business last month,” a fact that Jean neglects to mention in his new memoir. He also doesn’t mention an ongoing investigation by New York’s attorney general into Yele’s finances, which has found “improprieties.” Instead, Jean portrays “himself as persecuted like Jesus and Martin Luther King Jr.”
Can’t Sell Your Mansion? Raise the Price
Can’t sell your luxury home? Conventional logic says lower the price. But the Wall Street Journal says some home buyers have done the opposite to attract attention. It works in a keeping-up-with-the-Joneses way: when wealthy buyers see record-breaking sales, they are inspired to emulate.
Wendy Rolls Out New Logo
Wendy has gotten a make-over. The Ohio-based fast food chain just revamped their logo for the first time in 23 years, says the Columbus Dispatch. The new logo, which will appear in March, features “more contemporary cameo of the pig-tailed, freckled Wendy character and a softer script for the company’s name.”
High School Addiction: Flamin’ Hot Cheetos
There is a front-page story in the Chicago Tribune this morning about Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, specifically their enthusiastic fan base in high schools all across America. Experts worry about the high levels of salt and fat but the Tribune says “there is something about Flamin’ Hot Cheetos that inflames critics in a way that other snacks —including regular Cheetos—never did.” As a result they’ve been banned in several school districts.
