Expect Whimsy at London Games

Expect Whimsy at London Games

Expect some whimsy at the London opening ceremonies, says the Washington Post’s Anthony Faiola—think “James Bond in a helicopter” and “a Voldemort-vs.-Mary Poppins smackdown at Olympic Park.” The opening ceremonies will also be held in a stadium that is much humbler than what we saw in Beijing. Explains a British official: “I think there is a bit of a responsibility on us to bring these Games down to size and return them to a game for athletes.”

New Mr. Rogers

New Mr. Rogers

If you’ve been homesick for Mr. Rogers’ neighborhood, good news: The New York Post says Fred Rogers’ family just got the green light for an animated reboot of the iconic show based on the Daniel Tiger puppet.“‘Blue Clues” creator Angela Santomero was brought on to do the remake, which is called “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood” and premiers on PBS in September.

Wall Street Shutters “Trading Places” Pit

Wall Street Shutters “Trading Places” Pit

If you’re a fan of the Dan Aykroyd-Eddie Murphy classic, “Trading Places,” you’ll appreciate this: The Wall Street Journal says the ICE Futures exchange is shutting down the last of its trading pits. Specifically, the Journal says the coffee, sugar, cocoa, cotton…and frozen-concentrated orange juice trading pits will be replaced by electronic versions.

Facebook Continues to Falter

Facebook Continues to Falter

Facebook’s troubles continue to grow, says the Wall Street Journal this morning, as the company struggles to live up to its investor’s expectations. Shares dropped 10 percent yesterday after Facebook released its first post-IPO earnings report. Part of the problem is that more and more people are accessing the social media site on their smartphones, while most of Facebook’s ads—and therefore ad revenue—are tied to personal computers.

Tampa Stocks Up on Strippers For GOP Convention

Tampa Stocks Up on Strippers For GOP Convention

Tampa is stocking up on something predicted to be in high demand at the upcoming GOP convention: strippers. One gentleman’s club has even brought in a headliner who bears an “uncanny resemblance to a certain ex-governor from a wilderness state,” says the New York Times. According to club owners, Republican convention goers are bigger lap dance fans than their colleagues across the aisle, spending, on average, $150 to the Democrats’ $50.

Wanted: Ants from Around the Country

Wanted: Ants from Around the Country

Dream of being a scientist? All you need is “an index card, a plastic bag, money for cookies (preferably Keebler Pecan Sandies) and shipping” says the Chicago Tribune. The North Carolina-based School of Ants project is asking ordinary citizens to help them understand how insects move from place to place by crawling around and capturing critters from major metropolitan areas around the country. The plan is to create a map of the nation’s ants. Deadline to submit your ants is Wednesday.

Study: JFK #1 US Airport to Spread Disease

“In a report that will shock exactly zero New Yorkers,” the New York Daily News says JFK airport has earned the title of U.S. airport most likely to spread disease. The MIT scientists who conducted the study say the number one ranking has little to do with cleanliness—it’s more about what airports JFK connects to: “It’s like a social network, you’re a good spreader if your neighbors are good spreaders.” LAX came in second on the list.

250-Pound Beach Towel

Now that’s a beach towel. When Miami artist Misael Soto stakes out his place on the sand, it’s hard not to notice says the Sun Sentinel. His blue and white beach towel is 250 pounds and measures 59 feet long by 30 feet wide. Soto says the towel, which he sold his car to make, is a performance art piece designed to make people think about public spaces. The artist and his towel will begin a tour of East Coast beaches in August.
