12 People Killed at “Dark Knight” Screening in Denver

12 People Killed at “Dark Knight” Screening in Denver

A tragedy in Colorado this morning.  Initial reports said 14 people were killed and more than 50 were injured when a man opened fire at a midnight screening of the latest Batman film, “The Dark Night Rises,” though now officials say the death toll is likely 12.  Witnesses told the Denver Post the gunman was clad in black and wearing a mask. He allegedly threw a canister into the crowd of moviegoers, which released some sort of gas, before opening fire. Police have a suspect—a 24-year-old man—in custody.

Who Tickets Still Valid 33 Years Later

Sometimes it pays to hold on to things. The Who hasn’t played a show in Providence, Rhode Island since 1975. There was a show scheduled in 1979, but the mayor canceled it due to security concerns. Fans with enough foresight to hold on to those tickets are in luck, because the band just announced they would accept tickets from the canceled 1979 show when they come to town next year, as part of their North American tour.

Linsanity Hits Texas

Linsanity Hits Texas

New York had it first, and now it’s spread to Texas. On the front page of the Houston Chronicle, it’s Linsanity. Press from all over the world showed up to see Jeremy Lin return to where he started before his meteoric rise to fame. And judging by the screaming fans, he was missed.

Anchorman Actor Fred Willard Arrest for ‘Lewd Act’

Apparently someone needs to introduce Fred Willard to the Internet. Or maybe he just prefers watching his porn in the company of others. The 72-year-old actor was arrested during a routine sweep of an adult movie theater in Hollywood, says the LA Times. Police say Willard was engaged in a “lewd act” but did not elaborate.

Did I Say That?

Lock up the bat boys, says the New York Daily News. “And the pitching coach, the bench coach and the trainer, too.” Baseball wife Anna Benson once told Howard Stern she’d “do the whole team” if her husband, ex-Mets pitcher Kris Benson, ever cheated. And now he’s cheated.

Map Shows Drought’s Severity

Map Shows Drought’s Severity

The New York Times has an excellent map in this morning’s paper, showing just how severe the drought affecting more than half of the country is. Using historical data, they’ve created a series of maps, showing which areas of the country have experienced extreme drought in June (shown in orange) for every year since 1896.

The Netflix of Ties

It’s the Netflix of ties, says USA Today. Two college friends are the brains behind TieTry, a “through-the-mail tie-rental service.” Customers who buy a monthly subscription ($11.99 to $29.00) will receive one to five ties and a pre-paid envelope to returned them where they’re ready for a new pattern.

Review: ‘Queen of Versailles’ a Portrait of Obscene Wealth

Review: ‘Queen of Versailles’ a Portrait of Obscene Wealth

I’m curious to see a new documentary out today called “Queen of Versailles.” It’s about David and Jackie Siegel’s attempt to build the largest residential home in America. Director Lauren Greenfield started filming in 2007, and, as you might imagine, the housing crisis plays a large role. The New York Times’ A.O. Scott says the film has a PG rating for “obscene wealth, but mostly clean language.”
