U of Chicago Uses ‘Call Me Maybe’ Lyrics in Admissions Letter

U of Chicago Uses ‘Call Me Maybe’ Lyrics in Admissions Letter

The University of Chicago isn’t one of the nation’s “Top 20 Party Schools,” but the Chicago Tribune says the admissions department is try to hip up their game. Prospective students are receiving letters that use lyrics from Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe.” A sample: “We’re thrilled to hear that you’ve shown an interest in the University of Chicago, I know that we just met you — and this is crazy — but here are our numbers.”

Rolling Stones Coming to Brooklyn Arena

Rolling Stones Coming to Brooklyn Arena

Brooklyn residents will get some satisfaction this fall, says the New York Daily News. The Rolling Stones have just signed on to play at the brand-new Barclays Center in November. It’s the 50th anniversary of the band but they only have four concerts scheduled: two in Brooklyn and two in London.

Ryan Seacrest is Building an Empire

Ryan Seacrest is Building an Empire

I confess to some jealousy when I read the two-page Ryan Seacrest story in the Wall Street Journal this morning. Somehow, the guy has managed to grab about five of the top jobs in television. Harvey Weinstein says the 37-year-old Seacrest has great business acumen—which should be obvious because he’s turned his “American Idol” gig into a TV production empire that has $300 million in venture capital money to spend.

VIDEO: Clint Eastwood’s Bizarre RNC Speech

Mitt Romney was supposed to be the main event at the RNC last night. But then Clint Eastwood got on stage to open for him and spent 10 minutes talking to an empty chair, which was supposed to represent President Obama says the LA Times. After reminding the audience that there are some conservatives in Hollywood, he ripped into the president for the country’s 23 million unemployed and, oddly—given Romney’s position—for staying in Afghanistan so long. RNC Style Recap

RNC Style Recap

There’s a great RNC recap in the Washington Post Style section this morning. Recapping the convention’s winners and losers, writer Peter Frank asks whether Paul Ryan’s ice blue tie was chosen to bring out the color of his eyes: “If so, [the decision] was a marvelous one. For whenever the candidate…turned and stared right into the camera, his gaze was electric, a sexy look of youth and intensity that one suspects is going to be of high value this fall.”

Romney, Ryan Disregard Facts at RNC

Romney, Ryan Disregard Facts at RNC

The New York Times says there were so many factual errors in Mitt Romney’s speech last night and in the Paul Ryan speech the night before that “concerns about fact-checking have been largely set aside.” The paper points out several topics—the country’s credit rating, Medicare, G.M.’s Janesville plant—where the truth took the backseat.

Report: In Future, Florida Beaches Will Sizzle, Sink

Report: In Future, Florida Beaches Will Sizzle, Sink

Heading to Florida for the Labor Day weekend? Enjoy it while you can. The Orlando Sentinel says two non-profits chose the three-day holiday weekend to release a grim report about the future of Florida’s beaches. The report details how some stretches of Atlantic Ocean shoreline will become “intolerably hot” before sinking into the ocean.

Sometimes a picture really is worth 1,000 words.  Crazy photo in the LA Times this morning showing two enormous buildings being demolished yesterday to make way for a new transportation hub in Chongqing, China.
