Nothing ‘Free’ About the Freestyle

Nothing ‘Free’ About the Freestyle

There’s nothing “free” about the freestyle, says the Wall Street Journal this morning. Some in the swimming community think the ban on certain swimming styles should be lifted. Specifically, they want the underwater dolphin kick included on the list of acceptable styles—it’s permitted when swimmers turn, but not once they resurface.

Gabby Douglas is big news in all the papers this morning. The 16-year-old gymnast made history yesterday when she became the first African-American to the all-around Olympic gold in gymnastics. USA Today says Douglas was overwhelmed yesterday by her accomplishment, telling a reporter: “Someone mentioned that I was the first black American (to win the all-around gold), and I said, ‘Oh yeah, I forgot about that!’ I feel so honored.”

NASA Hopes Rover ‘Sticks Its Landing’

NASA is hoping to “stick its landing” on Monday, says the Houston Chronicle, when it attempts to put a one ton rover on the surface of Mars. Scientists admit that their plan, which involves parachuting the Volkswagen Beetle-sized rover through the Martian atmosphere sounds crazy, “but it’s actually the least crazy method.”

Fed Checks Up On Its Gold Supply

Did the heist in “Die Hard: With a Vengeance” actually happen? The Fed is quietly undergoing an audit of the gold reserves it has stored in an underground vault at the Federal Reserve building on Wall Street to put conspiracy theories about the stockpile to rest. The LA Times says investigators are drilling tiny holes in the gold bricks to confirm their authenticity. The results will be announced by the end of the year.

Opinion: ‘Only So Much Pop Culture We Can Follow’

The Chicago Tribune’s Mary Schmich writes a column this morning in defense of all of us who haven’t read “50 Shades of Gray.” Or watched “Breaking Bad.” Or seen the latest political gaffe. She says it’s become a “civic obligation not only to know what’s going on everywhere all the time, but to participate in it.” But there’s only enough pop culture Schmich can handle, and she reminds us that “time is a nonrenewable resource. You can’t do everything.”

Husband Fakes His Death

Husband Fakes His Death

A Long Island man really, really wanted to get away from his wife. So he faked his own death, going so far as to leave his clothes and wallet on the beach for her to find. The New York Post says he didn’t not have enough foresight, however, to realize that writing a slew of emails to his son with details of the bizarre plan, might backfire.
