Heat Wins NBA Finals, Big Three Era Officially Begins

Heat Wins NBA Finals, Big Three Era Officially Begins

The king finally has his crown, says the Miami Herald. Two years after joining the Heat, LeBron James led his team to the franchise’s second NBA title and the first one on their home turf, beating the Oklahoma City Thunder last night 121 to 106. Columnist Greg Cote says “there was the implied promise of a dynasty when this Big 3 era began in the summer of 2010, and every dynasty must begin with a championship.”

Moody’s Downgrades Five of Six Largest US Banks

Moody’s took its time, but yesterday the investment rating service finally released a blunt report warning investors of the risks faced by the biggest banks.  The downgrade affected five out of the six biggest US banks, reports the Wall Street Journal, most of which have big trading departments like Bank of America and J.P. Morgan.

Opinion: Call Me and Pay a Fee

Opinion: Call Me and Pay a Fee

There’s a good opinion piece in the New York Times this morning, making the case that the US needs to ban political “robocalls,” which are so cheap to make nowadays that they are surging. Rule suggests adding a fee to curb these “incivilities,” not unlike the structure used by 1-900 numbers to charge for time.

It’s grown back a little since then, but Ebben says she’ll likely keep it short when she represents her state in the Miss America pageant next January.

‘The Newsroom’ Debuts to Mixed Reviews

I’m looking forward to the debut of HBO’s “The Newsroom” this weekend—even if the reviews are mixed. The New York Times’s TV critic Alessandra Stanley says Aaron Sorkin’s latest effort “suffers from the same flaw that it decries on real cable shows on MSNBC or Fox News,” namely too much time pontificating and not enough time reporting. She does say that the series shows some promise, but not until the third or fourth episode.

Ann Curry’s Unfortunate Graphic

Ann Curry’s Unfortunate Graphic

A day after news broke that Ann Curry is leaving the “Today” show, NBC gave its anchor a message of its own, writes Linda Stasi of the New York Post. “Here today, gone tomorrow” appeared on screen under a close up of Curry as she was interviewing Steve Carrell. The phrase was in reference to Carrell’s new movie, but Stasi says “it sure read as if it was referring to Curry and her predicament.”
