Welcome to 20-10 (“Twenty Ten”)

It’s time to make the switch. We had good reasons for pronouncing 2009 as “Two thousand and nine.” But it’s time to switch to the convention that served us well up until 1999. Tomorrow will be “Twenty Ten.”

The New York Post picked up on my column. (For the record, the Post misunderstood one paragraph. NY1 decided a couple of weeks ago that we’re going with ‘Twenty Ten.”)

Jim Verhulst of the St. Petersburg Times made a convincing case for “Twenty Ten” in a column last Sunday.

UPDATE:  The Associated Press Stylebook weighed in on Twitter with a position in favor of “Twenty Ten.”
(And the clever @fakeAPstylebook parody site responded with ‘The year 2010 is pronounced “11111011010,” but for less formal situations “MMX”’)
