UBS Dress Code as “Precise as a Swiss Watch”

Written by Pat's Papers | Wednesday, 15 December 2010 10:33 AM

The Swiss are nothing if not precise. The Wall Street Journal got its hands on a 40-page grooming manual that Swiss bank UBS recently distributed to its employees. And it’s pretty unbelievable. Offering both general advice (Don’t eat garlic and onions; don’t wear socks that are too short and show skin while sitting) and gender specific pointers (“Light makeup consisting of foundation, mascara and discreet lipstick ... will enhance your personality”),  the manual reads more like style tips from a fashion magazine.

Nothing is overlooked. Men are directed to choose a tie that matches the “morphology of the face.”  And all employees are instructed to that “underwear must not be visible against clothing or spilling out of clothing.” To that end, the company suggests flesh-colored lingerie.

There must be some bad dye jobs in the ranks because a lot of energy is spent doling out hair dyeing advice. Woman are told to “touch up hair regrowth regularly if you color your hair” and men are gently reminded that “artificial color contrasts excessively with the actual age of your skin.”

We found a copy of the UBS dress code. Unfortunately, it’s in French. But it’s still fun to look through and a Google translation might make enough more so.

UPDATE Someone generously took the time to translate the French version into English. Check it out here.
