Editorial Misjudgment

Written by Pat's Papers | Friday, 3 September 2010 7:16 AM

Newsday’s editors have lost their minds. With Hurricane Earl barreling toward the eastern end of the paper’s market on Long Island, its front-page headline is “Mortgages at 40-Year Low.” Huh? They obviously got the memo—the storm is mentioned in the top right-hand corner of the front page. But unlike the New York Post, whose headline is appropriately cautionary (“Earl Takes Aim: Monster Storm Zeroes In On Long Island”), Newsday went for the breezy, “Earl Blows in Today,” accompanied by a picture of a nonchalant-looking lifeguard in ankle-high water.

To be fair, the mortgage story is well presented, but the fact that it’s a good time to refinance seems moot when a hurricane bent on destructing the homes that might benefit from a super financing deal is roaring up the coast.
