Celebrity Skate: The Performance

Written by Pats Papers | Friday, 18 May 2012 7:13 AM

I’ve been writing about it for two months since I agreed to take part in Ice Theatre of New York’s “Celebrity Skate.”

Last night was the moment of truth. In front of several hundred spectators at Chelsea Piers, I competed against fashion designer Nicole Miller and economist Robert Engle to see who could wow the crowd with a pairs skating routine.

Here’s my debut, with my professional partner Eve Chalom.

Even without fall I think it would have been tough for me to beat Robert, who achieved a level of figure skating skill that I couldn’t match. He was the winner of the three-way challenge. Olympic skating icon Dick Button was among the judges. He was kinder than he needed to be, praising me for making the tough transition from hockey skates to figure skates.

A big thanks to Eve and Ice Theatre’s artistic director Douglas Webster for hours and hours of patient coaching. I’m glad they asked me to take part—it was a fun experience with a great organization,.
